A meditation on
THE FIRST ADAM AND THE LAST ADAM
People very often get confused and say that Jesus was the second Adam but that is not scriptural –
Jesus is the LAST ADAM and the SECOND MAN.

He’s the Second Man because there have only ever been two real MEN on planet earth – the way that God intended humans to be - Adam before the Fall and Jesus since the Fall of Man.

Jesus is the Second Man because He was the perfect and complete man -
just as the First Man - Adam was, before he chose to disobey God.

Adam is: “The first man” who “was of the dust of the earth.”
Jesus is: “The second man” who “is of heaven!”
(1 Corinthians 15:47).

Jesus is the Last Adam because He is the final solution.
He turns it all around and brings an end to all the damage that the first Adam did.

The relevance of all of that for us is:

The FIRST Adam in the Garden of Eden effectively said
“My will be done.”

The LAST ADAM in the Garden of Gethsemane said
Thy will be done
“NOT MY WILL but THINE BE DONE”

And in this He is our perfect example of submission to God
but for Him it meant death on a cross.

The first Adam chose to disobey
The Last Adam chose to obey

The first Adam died because of HIS sin
The Last Adam died because of OUR sin

The first Adam brought sin into the world
The Last Adam brought salvation into the world

“The first man Adam became a living being” who gave us death.
“The last Adam, a life-giving spirit” who gives us life forevermore!
(1 Corinthians 15:45).

“Since death came through a man,
the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.
For as in Adam all die,
so in Christ all will be made alive.
(1 Corinthians 15:21-22)
Furthermore:
“Just as WE have borne the image of the earthly man,
so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.”
(1 Corinthians 15:49)
And…
“In the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.”
“The trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.
When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable,
and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true:
“Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

“Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
(I Corinthians 15:52-57)
